First of all apologies for the lack of updates to this page, we have not been paying enough attention to it for the last year or so and need to get it back up to speed. Watch this space!
A lot of things have been going on recently and lots more in the near future. So by means of a brief update:
We are now well under way in both the Brunel League and the Bath Thursday night League. With just one team in the Brunel League we are generally OK for players and our Captain will contact your if we are in need of assistance but if anyone of you feels that they want to play at a good level amongst some very good players then just let us know!
We just played a game in the Brunel KO Cup and wow what a close game it ended 3 1/2 to 3 1/2 so a draw and came down to points difference but it was so so close and tense probably one of the best matches i have played in (despite losing) Cangrats to Premier Cru and good luck in the next round.
The Thursday Night League is a bit different with 6 teams across the various divisions there is plenty of opportunity to play for everyone that wants to, most people will know the captains but again if you are unsure and want to play just make it known to someone during one of our Monday Club nights.
Talking of Club nights we have been going for a while now starting at 6.30pm. Of course it is for members and for anyone who thinks that they may wish to join it is a great time to pop along and find out about us. So come long. The pointing and shooting challenges are just starting so have a go. You can of course also have a word with our Coach if you are looking to improve your game and to simply find out more about playing and the game.
Most recently we celebrated those who we have sadly lost with a memorial fun day and a knock out game that involved navigating various obstacles and penalty rings to eventually roll out the winner. A good day was had by all and we raised a few bob for our charity too, so many thanks. Our chosen charity for this year (2024) is the local Bath Cancer Support Group so a local very worthwhile charity and thank you for any support (more details can be found at the Club).
We also just hosted a group of youngsters from Box Green Room where they were given some basic training and enjoyed a game as well as a burger or two from the BBQ and some squash. Thanks to all and hopefully some of our future members.
A few things to look forward too:
Our Midsummer Melee – to be arranged for 21st July hopefully you have seen the Email’s
Bath Boules Festival now ongoing in Queens Square. Pop along for a day out and a bit of fun.
Sherston Boules Festival to be held on 13th July entries all sold out but still a good days outing!
Biddy Boules – Another great boules day in Biddestone to be held on Sat 7th Sept. What a fun day that is and plenty of time to enter.
Well thats all for now i will try to get updates done more regularly from now on.
Internal League
Well what a great idea this was from our coaching co-ordinator as the Thursday Night Bath League was cancelled this year Allen Lovelock suggested that we played a mini league amongst ourselves.
Our respective teams were pulled together and it was a great event over the last 6/7 weeks playing mostly all at the same time our on our home pistes. A really great atmosphere and mix between social and competition. We even saw the return of the all inclusive Northey Originals! Generally a very enjoyable experience and our committee has already agreed that we will be look to see how we can repeat this for next season with maybe more teams and new players.
In the end I feel that the winners are The Northey Arms Boules Club itself as this was such an enjoyable event, but we also have winners and losers as always and it is a pleasure to announce that the winners are:
The No-Vices
But wow was it close! The No-Vices finished with the same game wins as The Cannyboules and amazingly with exactly the same points difference! However as they didn’t lose a game and actually won against The Cannyboules they take top position. So Cannyboules finished 2nd and Nomads a very close 3rd, who actually had a better points difference than anyone.
The full results are as below:
Team | Played | Won | Drew | Lost | Game Points | Points For | Points Against | Points Difference | |
2 | No-Vices | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 14 | 224 | 177 | 47 |
5 | Cannyboules | 5 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 14 | 227 | 180 | 47 |
6 | Nomads | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 13 | 224 | 152 | 72 |
4 | Originals | 5 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 10 | 187 | 214 | -27 |
3 | Bells & Whistles | 5 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 7 | 179 | 219 | -40 |
1 | Notables | 5 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 2 | 147 | 246 | -99 |
So congratulaions to Tim, Phil, Owen & Richard for their performances and we look forward to future chalenges.
There are individual performance statistics too which will be kept for the awards later in the year.
Thanks again Allen and keep bouling!
Thank you Chrissie!
As we enter into lockdown and boules as we know it comes to a close, life carries on and changes are upon us. Today Chrissie Aggett has moved away from the area to be closer to her daughters and their families. I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you! You have been an active member of our Club and will certainly be missed. Thank you for just being you, but for also stepping up and being captain of the Newbies team with some excellent results as well as sitting on the committee.
I’m sure everyone will join me in wising you all the very best for the future in your new home and hope you will continue to play Boules.
à bientôt mon ami
Autumn Cup
Thanks to all for turning out yesterday and making the traditional Chair Vs Sponsors Cup a fun day. Despite the actual sponsors not being available they were very ably represented by Bob Prior who through his very best effort couldn’t quite match the exceptional luck of the Chairman’s 8.
The Chairmans 8 snatched victory with 10 wins to 6 which bring the overall tally of wins to a very interesting 4 each since 2013 making next years competition one to look forward too.
Again thanks to all.
National Singles
Congratulations to Thierry Sarkissian for reaching the Semi-finals of Petanque Englands national championships at Gravesend. A great performance and really good to see a Northey Club member progress to such a level. Obviously it is all down to the quality of the competition he has faced and the superb training sessions he has received at our great Club. Well done Thierry!
Hooray!
Club nights have restarted and have been well supported. Thanks to all. Basically we are abiding by The Northey Covid policy and playing to the PE guidelines. With some 22 players last night tells us that many are felling comfortable with playing so we are going to continue. Max 30!!!!
We have also agreed to add a few more activities that will be starting very soon and continuing over the coming weeks:
- We will be running our club shooting competition on Club nights starting next week and it will run for the next 4 weeks.
- We will also be running a NEW pointing competition alongside the shooting competition and it too will start next week running for 4 weeks. These will run on pistes 1&2 leaving the others for games as normal.
- We have also decided to run the normal Club Singles and Club Drawn Pairs competitions on a single day rather than spread over several months. Both competitions will be limited to 30 maximum and entries will therefore be accepted on a 1st come 1st served basis. We have allocated:
- Sunday 6th September for the Drawn Pairs
- Sunday 13th September for the Singles
So, for the shooting and pointing competitions just turn up on Club night and have a go!
For the Singles and Drawn Pairs competitions please let me know by Email – curdyfish@gmail.com
PS. For info. We have also entered a team into a revised and much shortened Brunel League that will be running over the next two months.
Happy Bouling!

Coronavirus update
With the latest news and advice today the Northey Arms Boules Club has decided to suspend all Club activities until further notice.
Unfortunately this means no Club nights, no Dickos Doubles and no Spring Cup for now.
Hopefully we will get through this before the end of the season and get back to bouling soon. Meanwhile stay safe and hope to see you soon!

GWR Winter Doubles 1-3-20
Fresh from their latest (the only) victory in the European Cup Bob And Pete continued their run of good fortune seeing of the last two teams on the journey that was the Winter Doubles. Starting at 4th on the day this was already a very good position and with one result going their way during the day it meant that they jumped up a place to finish a very very creditable 3rd place.
Not forgetting Keith of course who whilst not playing in this round had apparently helped them along the way.
Well done Boys! Bring on the GWR Inter-regional qualifiers!
European Cup 29-2-20
Well that’s it done for another year. A great day out at Heart of England Hereford side based at the Seven Stars, Clehonger saw off our Eurocup challenge to get to the final round of the Plate competition.
In the opening triples Steve, Marie and Kevin came up against some super pointing opposition and great shooting whilst Bob, Pete and Graham also came up against a very strong triple with good local knowledge. With both teams losing the opening games it meant that we had to excel and take the win in all 3 double games. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be; Steve and Graham were well up and performing very well until their shooter got into his stride and the opposition came back to snatch the win. Kevin and Marie staged a late comeback but ended up on the losing side. That left the dynamic duo of Pete and Bob who took early advantage and after a few fortunate bounces were on the verge of winning for a nervy 10-15 minutes. Finally taking the win (the only win of the day). So out we went losing 4-1, but after a very warm welcome and refreshments in the cosy Seven Stars the players and loyal travelling supporters made the long trek home.
Thanks to Graham for the organisation and managing the squad. Bring on next year.
Congratulations to all our internal competition finalists, some great games en-route and good fun!
Our winners:
Singles Main – Steve Richman
Singles Plate – Kevin Ford
Drawn Pairs Main – Kath Morris and Thierry Sarkissian
Drawn Pairs Plate – Chrissie Edwards and Mike Curd
Nigel Manley
Very sad to hear that Nigel passed away on Sunday. A lovely man who played the game with a passion and was always so jolly.
Euro Cup (plate) finals 2019 will be held at the Worthing Petanque Club in Sussex on Sunday 28 April.
The four teams in the finals, of this national competition, will play each other in a round robin event of 2 triples and three doubles per round. The teams are Northey Arms Boules Club; Duke of Wellington PC (2) from Kent; Oxshott PC from Surrey and Arena PC from Nottinghamshire. Come on you Northey!!
Euro Cup 2019
In an exciting fourth round Eurocup match, the Northey Arms Boules Club ran out 4-1 winners over a strong Hereford side. They now go forward to the national finals. A fantastic result, played in great spirit by both teams. Congratulations to the Northey team.
After a slow start Alison, Mike and Steve made short work in their mixed triples match running out 13-2 winners. Pete, Bob and Graham came up against stronger resistance in their triples match but with Bob on form with his shooting they wore down the opposition eventually winning 13-7.
Alison and Mike set the pace with a great performance of pointing and shooting in their mixed doubles match, winning 13-7. Unfortunately Pete and Bob could not keep up the pace falling 9-13 to some resilient play by Hereford. An exciting and closely fought final doubles saw Steve and Graham involved in a see saw affair, but running out winners 13-12 in an exciting climax to a great match. Northey Originals Finish third in GWR Winter League. In a strong field of 28 teams the “Originals” of Steve, Callum and Graham finished third in the GWR regional winter doubles competition. Played throughout the winter, at different locations in the region, the Originals won 22 of their 27 games. All of the five Northey teams that entered, had very creditable performances. Well done all.
